I only shaved a minute off my time in this week’s 5K. That is pathetic, especially considering how flat the course was. I have absolutely no muscle soreness today, though. And in tonight’s restorative yoga class I noticed a new level of flexibility. You win some, you lose some, I suppose.

However, I have learned two things about my race performance: some weeks I’m going to be more sluggish than others, and I really need to make a point to hydrate the day before a race and get up early enough to drink even more water without needing to pee. My on-and-off run was primarily a shuffle until after the water station, and then I was able to take off.

Also, I need to figure out a way to get my heart rate monitor to cooperate with me. I think I need to tighten the chest strap (hooray!) and put some tape on the watch face’s sensor. If it wasn’t crapping out while I ran, it would try to detect my pulse through the back of my hand when I tipped my wrist up to see how I was doing.

Stephen ran this race, and beat me by a good bit. He’s still having difficulty getting his time under 40 minutes—but he never trains! I’m hoping that by continuing to train I can demonstrate that it pays off.

I have a few weeks before our next race. Here’s hoping the first digit on both our times will change.
